In this episode, host Naziaty addresses a second-year student’s setback after receiving harsh, unguided feedback—“I don’t like your plan. Please change”—that left him doubting the entire design process. The advice is clear: don’t take it personally, and instead turn the moment into dialogue by calmly asking the critic exactly what needs changing (circulation, entrance, overall scheme). Building your own viewpoint starts with trusting the site visits, interviews, and earlier projects you’ve already completed; the process of critical questioning and exploration matters far more than any single “perfect” solution.

To develop a confident voice, learn to “massage” plans, know when (and when not) to use precedents, and keep asking the difficult questions about space, light, and function—whether it’s the breathable voids of a courtyard or the technical demands of an air well. Architecture education can be bruising, but persistence, self-dialogue, and evidence of thoughtful design work are what ultimately shape a resilient architect.
